Did Israel kill hundreds of thousands in Gaza?

“The real toll is 186,000.” “680,000 killed.” “380,000 of them children under five.”

This page exists because the numbers keep growing. Every few months a new figure doubles the last one, goes viral attached to “study” or “UN,” and by the time anyone checks the method, the next number has arrived. Here is the paper trail on each, and the arithmetic that ends the argument.

In July 2024 the Lancet published a short Correspondence, a letter, not a study, by Rasha Khatib, Martin McKee and Salim Yusuf. The authors took the health ministry’s then-count of 37,396, applied an assumption of four indirect deaths for every direct death borrowed from unrelated conflicts, and wrote that the total “could” eventually reach 186,000 or more. Within days, headlines and posts worldwide reported that “the Lancet” had found 186,000 dead, present tense, as a count. Conflict-mortality specialists dismantled the multiplier almost immediately, Michael Spagat’s critique being the most thorough, and France 24’s fact check walked through how a letter became a “finding.” The correction never caught the headline. They never do.

680,000, and the children who would have to exist

In 2026 a paper by Gideon Polya and Richard Hil claimed roughly 680,000 dead, of whom 490,000 were children and 380,000 under five. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese amplified it, “if confirmed, 380,000 of them are infants under five.”

Now the arithmetic. Gaza’s pre-war population was about 2.2 million; the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics put the under-five cohort at roughly 340,000. The claim requires more dead under-fives than there were under-fives, with none left alive, while UN OCHA’s own education data recorded school enrollment growing through the war years. Even analysts who argue the official toll is an undercount rejected the paper on sight; Mitchell Plitnick, no defender of Israel, wrote that the numbers “simply don’t add up”. A UN rapporteur repeating a figure that fails against the UN’s own population tables tells you what the figure is for. It is not for counting.

What the record actually supports

State the real numbers plainly, because they are the disproof of the fake ones. The Gaza health ministry’s count reached about 70,000 by late 2025, a figure Israeli assessments broadly accept as the right order of magnitude while disputing its combatant share (that fight is its own page). The serious scholarly high estimate is a peer-reviewed Lancet Global Health field survey putting violent deaths at about 75,200 through January 2025, roughly 40 percent above the ministry’s contemporaneous list. That is the honest range: tens of thousands dead, a real methodological debate between the official list and survey estimates, bounded by demography on every side.

That range is a catastrophe. Seventy thousand dead human beings do not need inflating to matter. The inflation serves a different purpose: 70,000 is a war, and the propagandist needs a genocide, so the number must grow until it fits the word. Each invented figure borrows the credibility of an institution, the Lancet’s masthead, a UN title, and each collapses against the same test: people who are alive cannot have been killed.

The test that never fails

You will meet the next number before long; it will be bigger, and it will come wrapped in “study” or “rapporteur.” Run the same three checks this page ran. Is it a count or a projection? Who is in the multiplier? And does it survive the census? A death toll that requires more dead children than living children is not a dark revelation about Israel. It is a confession about whoever published it.
