Alawites

Hebrew: עלווים

A heterodox offshoot of Shia Islam in coastal Syria, historically despised as heretics and desperately poor. Elevated by the French mandate’s recruitment into the army, they produced the Assad dynasty, which ruled Syria from 1970 and drew its officer corps from the community.
