Nakba vs War of Independence
Two names for the same 1948 war from opposite sides. To Israelis it is the War of Independence, survival against five invading Arab armies. To Palestinians the Nakba, ‘catastrophe,’ is the flight and expulsion of roughly 700,000 Arabs. Left out of the slogan: the war was launched to destroy the new state after the Arab side rejected partition, and some 850,000 Jews were driven from Arab lands in the same years.
