Through 2015 the opening said Nadir Shah spent hours on the mosque roof to observe the Katl-e-Aam, which resulted in the massacre of 30,000 inhabitants. Today the opening makes no mention of Nadir Shah or the massacre, and the word appears nowhere in the article. A reader arriving now learns only the mosque’s architecture and history, not that 30,000 people were massacred in events connected to it.

The mosque’s original appearance has been altered as extensions to accommodate the faithful have been constructed. The mosque is also under threat from encroachment.
