Black Saturday

Hebrew: הַשַּׁבָּת הַשְּׁחוֹרָה

A name in Israel for the 7 October 2023 Hamas massacre, which fell on a Saturday (Shabbat) and the festival of Simchat Torah. The deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, with about 1,200 killed and 251 taken hostage, it became ‘the Black Saturday’ (ha-Shabbat ha-Shechora). An older, separate use of the term refers to 29 June 1946, when British forces raided the Jewish community of Mandatory Palestine.
