Myth: All Jews are white Europeans.
“All Jews are white Europeans.”
Origin of the claim
Section titled “Origin of the claim”The framing did not start as a demographic observation. It started as a political one. In 1975 the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 3379, declaring Zionism “a form of racism,” a campaign built on the premise that Israel was a European colonial implant planted on Arab land, a foreign body with no roots in the region it occupied. The resolution was revoked in 1991 by Resolution 46/86 after sixteen years on the books, but the underlying picture, Jews as white Europeans arriving to displace brown natives, outlived the vote. It resurfaced in academic settler colonialism theory from the 1990s onward, and it became a campus and protest-sign staple after 2014 and again after October 2023, when “Zionism = white supremacy” placards became common at US and European demonstrations. The claim also travels in a mirror-image form pushed by Black Hebrew Israelite groups, who argue that European Jews are impostors and that Black Americans are the true, displaced Israelites; that is a related but separate claim, addressed on its own page.
The record
Section titled “The record”The strongest version of the claim points to something real: the Zionist movement’s founding generation, from Theodor Herzl to David Ben-Gurion, was Ashkenazi and European, and the pre-1948 Yishuv was disproportionately made up of immigrants from Russia, Poland and Central Europe. That part of the history is true and the wiki does not soften it.
What the claim gets wrong is the population it describes today. Between 1948 and the early 1970s, roughly 850,000 Jews left or were driven out of Arab and Muslim countries where their communities had lived for over a thousand years. Iraq’s Jewish community, some 130,000 people, was airlifted out almost entirely in Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, 1950-1951, after the 1941 Farhud pogrom in Baghdad killed at least 180 Jews and after Iraqi law stripped Jewish citizens of their assets and nationality. Yemen’s roughly 49,000 Jews were flown out in Operation Magic Carpet, 1949-1950. Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Tunisia and Iran emptied of their Jewish populations across the same decades, and later, 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted some 30,000 Ethiopian Beta Israel Jews in Operations Moses and Solomon. None of these families arrived from Europe, and none looked or sounded like the Ashkenazi founders of the Zionist movement.
The result: today, a majority of Israeli Jews trace at least one parent or grandparent to the Middle East, North Africa, or Ethiopia rather than Europe, per Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics figures on countries of origin, and Mizrahi and Sephardi Israelis outnumber Ashkenazi Israelis when counted by ancestry rather than by which community holds more institutional power. Genetics closes the case rather than just describing it. Behar et al., “The genome-wide structure of the Jewish people,” published in Nature in 2010, and Atzmon et al.’s companion 2010 study, both found that Jewish populations worldwide, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, Yemenite, cluster genetically with each other and with other Middle Eastern populations, not with the European populations Ashkenazi Jews have lived among for a thousand years. A related, frequently recycled version of the “Jews aren’t really Middle Eastern” claim argues Ashkenazi Jews descend mainly from Khazar converts rather than from the ancient Levant; a 2013 study by Behar and colleagues in Human Biology tested that hypothesis directly against Caucasus populations and found no genetic evidence for it. That claim is addressed in full on its own page.
Who pushes it today
Section titled “Who pushes it today”The claim now circulates less as an explicit UN resolution and more as shorthand in decolonization-framed activism: campus groups, some academic settler-colonial theorists, and social media accounts arguing Israel is fundamentally a European transplant illegitimately using Middle Eastern land. It appears in the same breath as the settler colonialism charge and often alongside the Khazar claim, since both serve the same underlying argument: that Jews are foreign to the region, so their presence there is inherently colonial rather than a return.
The real friction inside Israeli society, and why it doesn’t rescue the myth
Section titled “The real friction inside Israeli society, and why it doesn’t rescue the myth”Mizrahi and Sephardi Israelis have not had an easy ride inside the state their families helped build. Ashkenazi leadership dominated Israeli politics, culture and the civil service for decades after 1948, and Mizrahi immigrants in the 1950s were often housed in transit camps and development towns with fewer resources, a grievance that produced the Israeli Black Panther protest movement of 1971 and still shows up in real, measurable income and representation gaps today.
None of that touches the claim under test. The myth says the population is white and European; the friction described above is a dispute between Middle Eastern, North African and Ethiopian Jews and an Ashkenazi minority that held disproportionate power, not evidence that the population itself is European. The founders were Ashkenazi. The country they built is majority Mizrahi and Sephardi, and the genetics and the airlift numbers already establish where that majority actually comes from.
