Greater vs Lesser Jihad

The popular claim that jihad mainly means a peaceful inner struggle, the ‘greater jihad,’ rests on a hadith that scholars grade weak to fabricated. The classical jurists treated jihad first as the ‘lesser,’ armed kind, a religious duty of expansion. The inner meaning is real; it simply was not the primary classical one.
