The indigenous peoples of North Africa, often called Berbers, a name they did not choose. Christian, Jewish and pagan before the Arab conquest of the 7th century, they resisted it for decades under leaders including the Kahina, and their languages and identity have been suppressed by Arab-nationalist states ever since.
