USS Liberty Incident

On 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli planes and torpedo boats attacked the US Navy ship USS Liberty, killing 34 Americans. Israel said it had mistaken the vessel for an Egyptian ship, apologised, and paid compensation. Ten US inquiries and the later NSA history concluded it was a tragic case of mistaken identity, not a deliberate attack on an ally.
