Bilu (movement): what Wikipedia removed

Bilu was a 19th-century movement of Russian Jewish pioneers who emigrated to settle Ottoman Palestine. Through 2005 the opening reported that the wave of pogroms of 1881-1884 and Tsar Alexander III’s anti-Semitic May Laws of 1882 prompted the mass Jewish emigration behind the movement. Today the opening describes Bilu’s founding and goals without naming the pogroms or the May Laws, though antisemitism survives once in the body. A reader today does not learn that pogroms and antisemitic laws were what drove the emigration that produced the Bilu movement.
