Dov Moran

Dov Moran (born 1955) is the Israeli electrical engineer whose company, M-Systems, patented the USB flash drive in 2000 and shipped it as the DiskOnKey, the keychain-sized device that ended the 3.5-inch floppy disk’s three-decade run and, with it, the age of carrying data on fragile spinning media. Every USB stick handed out at a conference, tucked into a laptop bag, or used to boot an installer today descends from the device his team built to solve his own problem: a dead laptop battery in the middle of a business trip, and nothing in his pocket to save the presentation.

Moran was born in 1955 in Ramat Gan, Israel, to a family of Holocaust survivors from Poland. His grandfather had been a Polish entrepreneur who lost six of his seven children in the Holocaust before rebuilding a life and a business in Israel. Moran earned his degree at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, and was drafted into the Israeli Navy in October 1973, at the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. He served roughly eight and a half years, working in a naval engineering unit on early microprocessor systems, the kind of hands-on electronics work that conscription routes technically able Israelis into well before they found companies. He later received honorary doctorates from the Technion and from the Moscow University of Radio and Technology.

In 1989 Moran founded M-Systems, a small Israeli firm building flash memory storage chips at a time when the technology’s main use was embedded industrial and military hardware, not consumer products. By 1995 the company had built DiskOnChip, a flash storage chip soldered directly onto circuit boards. The harder problem was consumer-usable, removable storage: NAND flash memory writes and erases data in whole blocks, wears out with repeated use, and needs error correction to stay reliable, none of which a floppy disk or a hard drive had to manage the same way. Turning raw flash chips into something a stranger could plug into any PC, write to instantly, and pull out safely required a controller chip that could translate ordinary USB commands into flash operations while managing wear and errors invisibly, all packed small enough to fit on a keyring. That is the specific thing that was hard, and the specific thing M-Systems solved.

The idea traces to a real failure: Moran’s laptop battery died before a US presentation, and he had no way to move his files to a borrowed machine. He resolved never to travel without a pocket backup again. M-Systems’ engineers, Amir Ban, Dov Moran, and Oron Ogdan, filed US patent 6,148,354, “Architecture for a Universal Serial Bus-Based PC Flash Disk,” on April 5, 1999. It was granted on November 14, 2000. The commercial product, developed under a team led by Dan Harkabi and named DiskOnKey, reached market in September 2000, the same year Singapore’s Trek 2000 shipped a competing ThumbDrive and IBM engineer Shimon Shmueli filed an internal disclosure describing a cable-free design closer to what actually shipped. IBM went on to sell M-Systems’ drives under its own brand. None of that resolved cleanly into one inventor: Trek sued rival manufacturers for patent infringement, won a Singapore court case in 2004, and lost a UK challenge in 2008. The honest record is a near-simultaneous, three-way invention race between Israeli, Singaporean, and American engineers, not a clean single origin story, and Moran’s team is the one that got a product onto shelves first under a granted US patent.

M-Systems grew from a chip supplier to over $1 billion in annual revenue within about eighteen years of its founding. In 2006, SanDisk acquired M-Systems for $1.6 billion, at the time the largest acquisition of an Israeli technology company. The format M-Systems patented went on to displace the floppy disk almost entirely within a decade, and industry-wide flash drive sales across all manufacturers passed $7 billion a year by 2021. Billions of the devices have shipped since, as the default way to move files without a network, boot an operating system installer, or hand someone data on the spot, a use case that predates cloud storage and still outlasts it in classrooms, labs, and any setting where a network connection cannot be assumed.

Moran’s path runs through two forces that show up again and again in Israeli technology: a family history of rebuilding from catastrophe, and a conscription system that puts technically capable teenagers into hands-on engineering roles years before their peers elsewhere enter a workforce. He was doing microprocessor work in a navy unit at eighteen, mid-war, not in a university lab. The instinct that produced DiskOnKey, that a company should ship a fix for a real, personally felt problem rather than a theoretical one, is the same chutzpah that let a small Israeli firm out-file IBM on the patent and outrun Trek 2000 to market. It is a pattern that recurs across Israel’s inventor class, not a one-off.

Moran’s record includes one plain failure. Reluctant to see M-Systems sold in 2006, even at $1.6 billion, he poured himself into his next venture, Modu, a modular cellphone whose core could snap into different physical shells; it raised more than $100 million and folded in 2011 as the smartphone market consolidated around the iPhone’s fixed-form model. Modu sold its patent portfolio to Google for $4.9 million, a fraction of what it raised. That failure does not sit outside the DiskOnKey story, it confirms the same instinct that produced it: some of those Modu patents later informed Google’s own short-lived Project Ara modular phone effort, which Google itself shelved in 2016, meaning the idea was sound enough that a company with far more resources tried it too and also failed. Moran kept building afterward, through Tower Semiconductor’s turnaround and his current venture fund, Grove Ventures, the same cycle of invention, loss and renewed building that produced the world’s dominant portable storage format in the first place.
