Jaysh al-Adl: what Wikipedia removed

Jaysh al-Adl is a Salafi Islamist jihadist militant organization operating out of Iran near the Pakistani border. Through October 6, 2023 the opening called it a Salafi Islamist militant organization and stated in Wikipedia’s own voice that “the group is responsible for several attacks against civilians and military personnel.” Today the opening calls it a “Baloch Sunni jihadist militant organization,” dropping Islamist from the opening description though it survives five times in the article, and says the group only “claimed responsibility for several attacks against military personnel.” A reader today does not learn that the group’s attacks were described as targeting civilians as well as military personnel.

  • The description of the group operating in both Pakistan and Iran narrowed to Iran alone, dropping the earlier mention of Pakistan.
  • This sentence stated in Wikipedia’s own voice that the group attacked civilians and military personnel; today’s opening says only that it ‘claimed responsibility’ for attacks on military personnel, with civilians dropped.
  • The wording changed from ‘claims’ to ‘has asserted’ without altering the substance, so a reader still learns the group calls itself a separatist movement.
