Daniel Pearl: what Wikipedia removed
Daniel Pearl was the American journalist kidnapped in Karachi and beheaded in 2002 while investigating alleged links between al-Qaeda and Richard Reid, the “Shoe Bomber.” As of October 6, 2023 the opening said his kidnapping was carried out by Islamist militants, and a separate line called him a journalist beheaded by terrorists. Today the word Islamist is gone from the opening, though it survives twice in the body, and the summary line now calls him a journalist beheaded by militants rather than terrorists. A reader arriving now learns he was taken by militants and does not learn that Wikipedia’s own opening once called this an Islamist and terrorist act.
The word “islamist” appeared 1 times in this article’s opening at its peak, in 6 October 2023. Today the opening carries none; the body carries 2. Checked against the full current article on 2026-08-01.
