Twelve Tribes

Hebrew: שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל

The twelve founding clans of Israel, descended from Jacob’s sons. After the kingdom split, the northern ten were lost to Assyrian exile in 722 BCE; the southern kingdom of Judah, from which the word “Jew” comes, endured.
