Fred Leuchter was not a chemist or an engineer; he built execution equipment and held a humanities degree. He chipped samples from 45-year-old walls, ignored that cyanide bonds far more in a delousing room than in a chamber used for minutes, and produced a paper that the Kraków Institute of Forensic Research took apart point by point. It is the founding text of “scientific” denial, and it is junk.

Origin: a defense exhibit, not a scientific study

The report exists because of one man’s legal defense. In January 1988, Ernst Zündel, a German-Canadian publisher on trial in Toronto for the second time under Canada’s “false news” law for distributing a pamphlet titled Did Six Million Really Die?, needed an expert to challenge that the gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau had functioned. His defense team hired Fred A. Leuchter, an American who designed and sold execution hardware, electric chairs, lethal-injection machines, gallows, to travel to Poland and produce a forensic opinion. Leuchter’s only credential was a bachelor’s degree in history from Boston University. He held no degree in chemistry, toxicology, engineering, or cremation science, the exact fields his report claimed to settle.

In late February 1988, Leuchter and a small crew entered the former camp without authorization from Polish state authorities, chiseled and hammered thirty-one fist-sized samples of brick and mortar from the ruined gas chambers at Auschwitz I and Birkenau, plus one control sample from a delousing building, and smuggled them out of the country in his luggage. He then had the samples analyzed by a US lab for total cyanide content and, on that single test, wrote “The Leuchter Report: An Engineering Report on the Alleged Execution Gas Chambers at Auschwitz, Birkenau and Majdanek in Poland,” concluding no one had ever been gassed there.

The claim’s strongest form, and why it collapses

Stated in its strongest form, the claim is this: chemical residue is the one kind of physical evidence that cannot lie, and Leuchter’s lab found only trace cyanide in the gas chamber ruins compared to the delousing building next door, so the chambers could not have been used to kill people. That is the entire case. It collapses on inspection.

First, the chemistry was rigged by the comparison itself. Zyklon-B (hydrogen cyanide adsorbed onto a carrier) reacts with brick and mortar to form iron-cyanide compounds, and how deep that reaction penetrates depends on exposure time and concentration. The delousing chambers ran fumigation cycles for many hours to days at low concentration to kill lice eggs, soaking the walls. The homicidal gas chambers were used in bursts of roughly twenty minutes at far higher, lethal concentration, then ventilated. Comparing total residue between the two rooms and expecting equal results is not a chemistry error, it is a category error, and Leuchter, having no chemistry training, did not know it was one.

Second, his sampling was not evidence, it was contamination. Leuchter’s own testimony and later forensic review established that he took uncontrolled, undocumented samples with no chain of custody, no control for depth, and then had them ground into powder before testing, which dilutes near-surface cyanide compounds across the whole mass of a sample instead of measuring where the reaction actually occurred. A rebuttal analysis by James Roth, the chemist at Leuchter’s own contracted laboratory, stated after the fact that surface testing, not bulk grinding, was the appropriate method, and that his results had been misused to draw conclusions the data could not support.

Third, independent testing answered the question directly. The Polish government’s Institute of Forensic Research in Kraków (Instytut Ekspertyz Sądowych), asked by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum to review the matter, conducted its own 1994 analysis under Dr. Jan Markiewicz. Using proper surface sampling, it found measurable cyanide compounds in the gas chamber walls, low in absolute terms after 45-plus years of weathering, but present, and consistent with short, high-concentration exposure rather than the long, low-concentration exposure typical of delousing. The chemistry Leuchter presented as exculpatory in fact matched the historical account once measured correctly.

Fourth, and most simply: Leuchter’s report was tested in the one place papers like this are supposed to be tested, a courtroom, and it failed. When the Zündel defense tried to enter Leuchter as an expert witness, the judge in the 1988 trial declined to qualify him as an expert given his lack of relevant credentials, and the report itself was excluded as scientific evidence. Leuchter was later prosecuted by the state of Massachusetts in 1990 for practicing engineering without a license, in the course of which it was confirmed he held no engineering degree or license of any kind.

Who pushes it today, and where

The report’s afterlife runs through David Irving, who was present at the 1988 Zündel trial, wrote an admiring foreword to the Leuchter Report praising Leuchter’s “integrity” while omitting his lack of qualifications, and later described himself as having been converted to denial by reading it. That claim became central evidence in the 2000 London libel trial Irving brought against historian Deborah Lipstadt, where Justice Charles Gray found Irving had knowingly promoted a document he had reason to know was fraudulent. The report circulates today on denial forums, self-published revisionist reprints, and channels branded as “revisionist history,” almost always stripped of the fact that no court has ever accepted it and its own lab chemist disavowed the interpretation placed on his data.

The low numbers denial quotes, and what they actually confirm

The Kraków Institute’s own 1994 numbers are small in absolute terms, low parts-per-million residues after nearly five decades of rain, cleaning, and reconstruction, and deniers still quote that low figure out of context to suggest “even the Poles found almost nothing.” What that framing skips is that the comparison was never about matching the delousing building’s saturation levels; it was about confirming a chemical signature consistent with short lethal exposure, which the Institute did. Trace evidence in a demolished, weathered ruin was never going to be the load-bearing proof of the Holocaust, that proof is the SS’s own construction and operational paperwork, the confessions of the men who ran the camps, and eyewitness testimony from both sides of the chamber door. The chemistry was always a secondary check, and even that secondary check, done properly, points the same direction as everything else.
