Zionism, race and genetics

This page is a corrective companion to Wikipedia’s article Zionism, race and genetics. Wikipedia’s Israel-Palestine articles have a documented bias problem; below are the framing problems recorded in our audit (checked 2026-06), each verifiable against the live article.

The genetics are not in dispute: since 2000, more than a dozen independently conducted studies, using unrelated methods and unrelated research teams on three continents, have found that Jewish communities scattered across the globe for two thousand years share a common Middle Eastern genetic core and cluster most closely with other Levantine populations, including Palestinian Arabs and Druze. That finding corroborates the textual, archaeological and linguistic case for Jewish indigeneity to the land Zionism sought to return to. Wikipedia’s article does not dispute the data; it reframes the data itself as a political project, folding real population genetics into the same article as 19th-century pseudoscience and treating the whole subject as evidence of Zionist ideology rather than peer-reviewed science. An honest article separates the two: what the genetics actually show, why a rival theory built to erase the connection collapsed under testing, and what real race science looked like when it was actually used against Jews.

The two most cited studies are Behar et al., “The Genome-Wide Structure of the Jewish People,” published in Nature in 2010, and Atzmon et al., “Abraham’s Children in the Genome Era,” published the same year. Both sampled Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi and other Jewish communities and compared them against surrounding populations. Both found the same thing from different angles: Jewish populations from Iran to Poland share a measurable degree of common ancestry with each other that exceeds their genetic similarity to the non-Jewish populations they lived alongside for centuries, and that shared ancestry traces to the Eastern Mediterranean, meaning the Levant. Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews, separated by roughly a thousand years and a continent, turned out to be genetically closer to each other, and to Iraqi and Iranian Jews, than any of them are to their European or North African host populations. The Ashkenazi population itself shows a genetic bottleneck consistent with a small founding group, a few hundred to a few thousand people, roughly 600 to 800 years ago, layered on top of the older Levantine core. None of this required or claimed a “pure race”; population genetics measures shared ancestry and admixture, the same statistical toolkit used to study any ethnic or regional population, and the same toolkit that identified the founder mutations behind Tay-Sachs disease and BRCA-linked cancers in Ashkenazi communities, research nobody calls “race science.”

The rival claim has a name and a paper trail. Arthur Koestler’s 1976 book The Thirteenth Tribe popularized the idea that Ashkenazi Jews descend not from the ancient Israelites but from the Khazars, a Turkic people whose ruling class converted to Judaism in the 8th century along the Volga and Caucasus. The theory had an obvious political payload: if Ashkenazi Jews, the largest Jewish population by the 20th century, have no biological line back to the Levant, then Zionism’s claim of return loses its genealogical footing. Israeli historian Shlomo Sand revived the argument in his 2008 book The Invention of the Jewish People, arguing Jewish peoplehood itself was a 19th-century invention built partly on this fiction; the Khazar myth is still a live talking point in anti-Zionist arguments today, addressed directly at are Ashkenazi Jews descended from Khazar converts. The theory was testable, and it was tested. Behar et al. followed up in 2013 with a dedicated study in Human Biology comparing Ashkenazi genomes against reference populations from the Caucasus and Volga-Ural region specifically built to detect Khazar signal, and found none: no significant genetic contribution from Caucasus or Turkic populations to the Ashkenazi gene pool. The Levantine core held up under the test designed to break it.

The “race science” label carries weight because it happened, and it happened to Jews specifically. Nazi Germany’s Nuremberg Laws of 1935 classified “Jewishness” as a biological race, stripped citizenship on that basis, and built an entire pseudoscientific apparatus, complete with university chairs and government institutes, to justify persecution culminating in genocide. That is what race science is: biology conscripted to rank human beings and license their treatment as inferior. Modern population genetics does the opposite of that work. It does not rank; it maps shared descent using the same statistical methods applied to Finns, Basques, Han Chinese or any other population geneticists study, and it has been independently replicated by Israeli, American and European teams with no coordination and no shared institutional agenda. Equating the two because both use the word “Jewish” and “genetics” in the same sentence is the move Wikipedia’s article makes, and it is the move that does the actual disservice to the history of real race science by diluting the term.

The “Zionism is racism” framing did not start with genetics; it started with a vote. On 10 November 1975, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 3379, declaring “Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination,” 72 in favor, 35 against, 32 abstaining, with the Soviet bloc, Arab League and much of the Non-Aligned Movement providing the majority. US Ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan called it “obscene” from the floor. The resolution stood for sixteen years and was formally revoked by Resolution 46/86 on 16 December 1991, 111 to 25, after the end of the Cold War removed the bloc that had sustained it and ahead of the Madrid peace conference. The genetics debate inherited that older accusation’s structure: a movement of Jewish national self-determination recast, this time through the vocabulary of biology instead of UN resolutions, as inherently racial.

The finding is not monolithic, and the differences are worth stating plainly. Jewish populations are not a single genetic bloc: Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi communities carry distinct admixture signatures from centuries in Europe, Iberia and the Middle East, and Ethiopia’s Beta Israel community shows a genetic profile closer to neighboring East African populations than to other Jewish groups, a genuinely contested case among researchers over how much of its ancestry is shared with the Levantine core versus acquired through conversion and intermarriage over many centuries; the claim that all Jews are white Europeans is false on this evidence alone. Jewish identity has also never been purely biological: conversion has been part of Jewish life since antiquity, and no serious geneticist or historian argues Jews are a single race in the 19th-century biological sense. Genetics alone does not confer political rights to a state either; the case for a Jewish homeland rests on continuous religious practice, archaeology, and two thousand years of textual and liturgical memory of the land, with genetics as one corroborating strand rather than the whole argument, a fuller answer to where Jews are from. None of that diversity weakens the core finding, it sharpens it: Wikipedia’s article treats the corroboration itself as the problem, the same inversion documented at Zionism as settler colonialism, where evidence of a genuine historical tie gets folded into an accusation instead of weighed as evidence.
