Denial claim: The Nazi confessions were tortured out of them by the Allies.
“The Nazi confessions were tortured out of them by the Allies.”
Hundreds of perpetrators testified across five decades, in German, Israeli, Polish and American courts, and in voluntary filmed interviews with no interrogator present, the SS doctor Hans Münch, the Treblinka guard Franz Suchomel. Their accounts match one another and match the documents. Not one has ever recanted, not on his deathbed, not when there was nothing left to fear.
Origin of the claim
Section titled “Origin of the claim”The argument traces to Paul Rassinier, a French socialist who survived Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora and became one of the first postwar Holocaust deniers. In Le Mensonge d’Ulysse (1950) and The Drama of European Jewry (1964), Rassinier argued that atrocities had been exaggerated, that camp inmates rather than the SS ran the killing, and that convicted war criminals’ testimony was worthless because it had been extracted by “coercion,” without supplying documentation. From 1978 onward, the Institute for Historical Review, founded in California to launder denial as academic inquiry, republished and amplified Rassinier’s work, and the coerced-confession argument has been repeated since by Robert Faurisson, David Irving and every major denier who followed them.
The strongest hook the claim has, and where it breaks
Section titled “The strongest hook the claim has, and where it breaks”The claim’s strongest hook is real. Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz from 1940 to 1943, was captured by British troops on 11 March 1946 disguised as a farmhand named Franz Lang. He was beaten during his first interrogation, by his own later account and by the account of his British captor Bernard Clarke, and Höss wrote afterward that “the whip was too much for me.” Deniers cite that one episode, plus a secondhand document alleged by Robert Faurisson that has never been produced, to argue that Höss’s confession, and by extension every Nazi confession, was fabricated under duress.
The documented record does not support the extension. Höss’s beating happened at a single early interrogation session. His formal statement used at Nuremberg is dated 16 March 1946, he testified in person at the International Military Tribunal on 15 April 1946 with defense counsel present, and he was then held by Poland, not Britain, until his execution in April 1947, during which he wrote a full autobiography in Kraków prison with no British or American interrogator near him. It repeats the same camp population figures and killing methods as his first statement, and matches, independently, the separately interrogated SS guard Pery Broad.
The larger problem for the claim is the sheer number of confessions made with no Allied interrogator in the room at all:
- Franz Suchomel, an SS guard at Treblinka, spoke on hidden camera to the filmmaker Claude Lanzmann in Bavaria in April 1976, thirty years after the war, a free West German citizen who did not know he was being filmed and could have simply declined. He described the gas chambers and body disposal at Treblinka in operational detail.
- Hans Münch, an SS doctor at Auschwitz acquitted at the 1947 Kraków trial, the only defendant acquitted there, went on giving expert testimony for decades afterward, including at the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials of the 1960s, as a free man with nothing to gain and no captor present.
- Adolf Eichmann spoke for 70 hours to the Dutch journalist and fellow fugitive Willem Sassen in Buenos Aires in 1957, three years before Israeli agents captured him. Uncoerced, on tape, he said he would be “content” that “10.3 million Jews” had died and described feeding victims into gas chambers with hydrogen cyanide, then tried to walk it back at his 1961 Jerusalem trial, held under Israeli, not Allied, custody with a lawyer of his own choosing.
- Kurt Gerstein, an SS officer who witnessed gassings at Belzec, was so disturbed that in 1942, three years before anyone captured him, he tried to alert a Swedish diplomat, a Swiss diplomat and Vatican officials. In April 1945 he surrendered to French forces voluntarily and wrote what became known as the Gerstein Report, describing the killing process in detail, before he was found dead in a Paris cell that July.
None of these men were beaten, threatened, or in custody of any kind when they described the machinery of the Final Solution. Their accounts converge with each other and with the paper trail the Nazis left themselves: the Wannsee Conference protocol, Einsatzgruppen operational reports tallying their own killings by location and date, camp construction records, and the postwar testimony of Sonderkommando prisoners who worked the gas chambers under German guard and never saw these men’s statements before giving their own.
Who pushes it today
Section titled “Who pushes it today”The Institute for Historical Review still circulates the argument, and it recurs on denial forums, self-published “revisionist” pamphlets, and short-form social clips that isolate the Höss beating from its context and present it as proof the entire trial record is fiction. It is a load-bearing move for denial: if confessions can be dismissed wholesale, the six million figure and the eyewitness record lose their anchor, clearing the way for deniers to demand only the kind of narrow forensic proof they have pre-defined as impossible, the same move behind the Leuchter Report.
The one flawed interrogation, and why it doesn’t collapse the case
Section titled “The one flawed interrogation, and why it doesn’t collapse the case”The Höss beating happened, and it is a legitimate flaw in that one interrogation record. Historians and prosecutors do not rely on that record alone for exactly this reason. Höss’s Nuremberg affidavit and his Kraków-written autobiography were produced independent of the coerced session, and Suchomel’s hidden-camera confession, Münch’s decades of free testimony, Eichmann’s Sassen tapes and Gerstein’s voluntary report share no comparable defect. A flaw in one early document does not collapse a self-corroborating archive built from hundreds of independent perpetrators, sworn in different countries, under different legal systems, decades apart.
