Taqiyya

The concealment of one’s faith or intent in Islam, rooted in Shia history as protection for a persecuted minority. Islamists deflect that it only allows hiding belief to survive a threat, which skips two things. First, it travels with kitman (telling half a truth) and tawriya (a literally true sentence chosen to plant a false impression) to mislead a non-Muslim audience. Second, the “only in wartime” limit is hollow where classical doctrine treats the non-Muslim world as dar al-harb, a standing house of war until it submits, so wartime is the default rather than the exception, and truces (on the Hudaybiyya model) are tactical and breakable. In practice it is used to project a moderate face while the goal does not change. Anti-Islam polemic overstates it into “Muslims may always lie to every non-Muslim,” which is false; the Islamist version that it is harmless self-protection is false too.
