The Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year: a 25-hour fast of repentance. Egypt and Syria invaded Israel on it in 1973. On it in 2025, an Islamist terrorist drove a car into worshippers at Manchester’s Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation and then attacked them with a knife, murdering two Jews. The holiest, most defenseless day on the calendar is chosen deliberately, and it has been chosen more than once.
