The New Synagogue in Dresden was built in 2001 on the site of the Semper Synagogue, destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938. Through October 2023 the opening described how in 2012 “unknown persons broke the mail box… and spray-painted a blasphemous inscription on the external wall, allegedly as an anti-Semitic act.” Today the opening covers only the building’s construction and its predecessor’s destruction, and the word survives once in the body. A reader today does not learn that the synagogue was vandalized with an antisemitic inscription in 2012.
