Denial claim: If six million really died, where did they go? They emigrated after the war.
“If six million really died, where did they go? They emigrated after the war.”
The arithmetic is merciless. Europe held roughly nine million Jews before the war; two of every three were dead by the end. Post-war emigration to Israel, America and elsewhere is fully documented and accounts for a small fraction of the missing. The rest did not move to anywhere. Nazi Germany murdered them where they lived.
Origin of the claim
Section titled “Origin of the claim”The claim has a paper trail. In 1969 the Liberty Lobby’s Noontide Press, run by Willis Carto, distributed a pamphlet titled The Myth of the Six Million, arguing the death toll was fabricated. In 1973 the American academic Austin J. App published The Six Million Swindle: Blackmailing the German People for Hard Marks with Fabricated Corpses, the pamphlet that gave the modern movement its template: rather than deny Jews vanished from Europe, assert they relocated, chiefly to the United States and to what became Israel. Paul Rassinier, a French former camp inmate, had laid groundwork in 1964 with The Drama of European Jewry, claiming the gas chambers were a “Zionist” invention. In 1978 the Institute for Historical Review formalized these claims into an institution, offering $50,000 to anyone who could “prove” Jews were gassed at Auschwitz; no one collected, because the burden of proof was never honest. That lineage, App to Rassinier to the IHR, is the direct ancestor of the claim circulating today.
The claim, and the record against it
Section titled “The claim, and the record against it”Stated at its strongest: Europe’s Jews did not disappear into crematoria, they scattered, to Palestine before 1948 and to Israel after, to the United States under postwar refugee law, to Latin America and elsewhere, and the “six million” figure simply double-counts a population that quietly relocated. It is a claim that sounds plausible only if no one checks the numbers.
The checking has been done, exhaustively, since 1945. The Nuremberg Tribunal convened in 1945 to try the men who ran the machinery, and its evidentiary record includes the perpetrators’ own internal accounting: Nazi transport manifests, camp registries and the SS statistician Richard Korherr’s 1943 report to Heinrich Himmler tallying Jews already “processed” under the Final Solution set in motion at the January 1942 Wannsee Conference. These are not postwar estimates; they are the killers’ own paperwork, cross-checked against Allied army records, Soviet archives opened after 1989, and the German Federal Archives’ postwar tracing service. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s demographic methodology compares prewar and postwar Jewish population censuses country by country and arrives at the same figure historians have used since the Nuremberg judges did: close to six million dead, out of a prewar European Jewish population the USHMM puts at roughly nine million. The gap is not a filing error. Roughly 1.1 million of the dead were murdered at Auschwitz alone; another two million were shot by Einsatzgruppen killing squads in the east before the camps were even built.
Emigration is real, and documented in equal detail, which is precisely the problem for the claim: the paper trail shows how small it was. The USHMM’s own encyclopedia records that from 1945 to 1952, at its absolute peak, roughly 250,000 Jewish displaced persons lived in camps and urban centers across Germany, Austria and Italy, the survivors of the six million, not a substitute for them. Of those, the Brihah movement smuggled more than 100,000 Jews into British Mandate Palestine between 1945 and 1948, and by 1952 about 136,000 Jewish DPs had settled in the new State of Israel through aliyah, over 80,000 had immigrated to the United States under the 1948 Displaced Persons Act, and roughly 20,000 more went to Canada, South Africa and elsewhere. Add it up and the total documented postwar Jewish emigration comes to under 300,000 people, names, ship manifests, immigration files and camp registration cards all still on record. Six million minus 300,000 leaves the number the deniers need to explain away untouched. There is no undocumented mass migration hiding in the gap; the DP camps were tracked by the Allies, UNRRA and the International Refugee Organization precisely because postwar authorities needed to know who had survived and where they were going.
Who pushes it today
Section titled “Who pushes it today”The Institute for Historical Review is still active, and its arguments now circulate far beyond its own newsletter, repackaged on social media, in denial forums, and by state actors. The USHMM documents state-sponsored Holocaust denial originating from Iran, including government-backed cartoon contests mocking the death toll, a modern echo of the same App-era arithmetic dressed up as skepticism. Online, the claim resurfaces as a rhetorical question rather than a sourced argument, “where are the bodies, where did they go,” precisely because it cannot survive contact with the transport manifests, the Korherr Report or the DP camp registries. It travels alongside companion claims that the six million figure itself is invented and that the gas chambers never existed, each one answered the same way: with the documents the killers themselves left behind.
What’s actually uncertain, and why it doesn’t move the number
Section titled “What’s actually uncertain, and why it doesn’t move the number”Two things are genuinely true. Prewar population figures vary by a few hundred thousand depending on which 1933 to 1939 census and border is used, and a real postwar Jewish exodus did happen, out of Displaced Persons camps, out of Arab and Soviet lands, into Israel and the West. Neither fact does any work for the denial claim. The census variance changes the death toll’s precision, not its scale, historians still give a range around nine million prewar either way. And the exodus is the same under-300,000 figure already documented above, tracked by name through DP camp registries and immigration files, separately from the killing. The two real facts sit next to the claim, not inside it: deniers need to blur emigration and murder together precisely because neither one, examined on its own record, gets them anywhere near an explanation for six million dead.
