Leon Pinsker: what Wikipedia removed

Leon Pinsker was a Zionist activist who grew disillusioned that enlightenment alone could defeat antisemitism and who coined his own term, Judeophobia, for it. Through 2010 the opening stated that “Pinsker’s views changed radically, and he no longer believed that mere humanism and enlightenment would defeat anti-Semitism,” and that he “preferred medical term ‘Judeophobia’ to a recently introduced misnomer ‘anti-Semitism’.” Today’s opening describes the Odessa pogroms and his founding of Hibbat Zion but never uses the word antisemitism, which survives three times elsewhere in the article, not the opening. A reader arriving now does not learn that Pinsker explicitly abandoned his belief that enlightenment could defeat antisemitism or that he coined his own term for it.
