Are Black Americans the true Israelites and today's Jews impostors?

“Black Americans are the true Israelites, and today’s Jews are impostors.”

This is the creed of the extremist fringe of the Black Hebrew Israelite movement: that Jews “stole” a heritage belonging to Black people and are therefore frauds. It is false on every front. Jewish populations carry documented Levantine ancestry traced to the Land of Israel; the priestly Kohanim share a common genetic signature; and Jewish presence, language and scripture run in an unbroken line for 3,000 years, confirmed by the Dead Sea Scrolls. The “impostor” charge is an identity-theft conspiracy, a cousin of the antisemitic Khazar myth, and the ADL classifies the sects that preach it as hate groups. The 2019 Jersey City kosher-market murders were committed by adherents.

Origin of the claim

The Black Hebrew Israelite tradition traces to the decades after Emancipation, when formerly enslaved Black Americans read the Exodus story as their own history. F.S. Cherry founded the Church of the Living God in the 1880s, teaching the biblical figures were Black; William Saunders Crowdy’s Church of God and Saints of Christ (1896) blended Christianity with Israelite identity but preached no hatred of other groups; Wentworth Arthur Matthew’s Commandment Keepers, founded in Harlem in 1919, saw some members formally convert to normative Judaism. None of these founding congregations called Jews frauds.

The “impostor” theology, that Ashkenazi and other mainstream Jews are not real Jews and stole a Black inheritance, hardened later. In 1960s Harlem, Abba Bivens’s “Israelite School,” known as “One West,” fused Israelite identity with a doctrine of racial supersession: Black Americans as the true Twelve Tribes, other Jews as impostors descended from Esau. That doctrine spread from the late 1990s through splinter sects, Israel United in Christ (founded 2003, roughly 71 US chapters), the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge, and the Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ in Harlem, the “extremist fringe” distinct from the non-hateful tradition they split from.

The claim versus the record

Stated fairly, the claim holds that the biblical Israelites were a Black African people, that the Atlantic slave trade was the curse of Deuteronomy 28 falling on them, and that people calling themselves Jews today, most visibly Ashkenazi Jews of European appearance, descend from unrelated converts, an argument borrowed from the antisemitic Khazar myth, who assumed the Israelite name to claim a homeland never theirs.

The record runs the opposite way. Behar et al. in Nature (2010) found Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews cluster together genetically with a shared Middle Eastern origin distinct from their host populations; a 2013 follow-up by Behar and colleagues tested and rejected the Khazar-conversion hypothesis specifically. The priestly Kohanim carry a distinct Y-chromosome signature shared across Ashkenazi and Mizrahi lines, evidence of common patrilineal descent, not disconnected conversion. And the Dead Sea Scrolls, copied roughly 2,200 years ago and rediscovered at Qumran in 1947, preserve a Hebrew Bible text essentially identical to the one read in synagogues today: the same people, the same scripture, an unbroken chain.

The chronology alone defeats the “hand-off” premise. Israelite identity is roughly 3,000 years old; the Atlantic slave trade began in the 1500s. Jewish communities are independently and continuously documented in Judea, Babylon, Rome, North Africa, Spain and the Rhineland across those 1,500-plus intervening years, in Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Christian sources alike. There is no gap for anyone to have stolen an identity into. The companion claim, that Jews secretly ran the Atlantic slave trade to cover the theft, has been examined and rejected in the same detail (see did Jews control or run the Atlantic slave trade?); David Brion Davis and Henry Louis Gates Jr. both dismantled it in the early 1990s, Gates calling the underlying literature “one of the most sophisticated instances of hate literature yet compiled.”

Who pushes it today

The extremist sects operate mainly through street preaching: loudspeaker sermons and staged confrontations outside subway stops and monuments in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, reposted to social media for wider reach. IUIC has drawn an 800-person march in Memphis (2018) and a 1,000-attendee conference in Chicago (2019); House of Israel members confronted high-school students at the Lincoln Memorial in January 2019 and staged antisemitic protests in Philadelphia in 2020. The ADL classifies these sects, not the broader Black Hebrew Israelite tradition, as a hate movement.

The violence is documented, not hypothetical. On December 10, 2019, David N. Anderson, 47, and Francine Graham, 50, shot and killed three people, Moshe Deutsch, Douglas Miguel Rodriguez and store co-owner Leah Mindel Ferencz, at the JC Kosher Supermarket in Jersey City, New Jersey, after killing a police detective earlier that day. New Jersey’s attorney general said the pair had expressed interest in Black Hebrew Israelite ideology and viewed Jews as “impostors,” language matching the extremist sects’ core teaching.

There are real, ancient African Jewish communities, above all the Beta Israel of Ethiopia, who kept Jewish practice for centuries, are recognized as Jews, and mostly live in Israel today. They have no connection to the Hebrew Israelite movement, a 19th-century American invention, and do not endorse its claims; their existence disproves the movement’s premise, since actual African Jews joined the Jewish people rather than calling them impostors. Most individuals drawn to a Hebrew-Israelite identity are not violent extremists, and the founding congregations preached no hatred at all. The lie is narrow: that mainstream Jews are frauds with no claim to their own history.
