The Afula bus suicide bombing killed eight Israeli civilians and injured 55 on 6 April 1994, the first Palestinian suicide bombing against Israeli civilians. Through 2010 the opening said the attack was carried out in retaliation for the Cave of the Patriarchs massacre carried out by Baruch Goldstein. Today’s opening still notes a retaliatory motive but names neither Goldstein nor the massacre, describing only “the killing by a settler of 29 Muslims”; the word massacre survives five times elsewhere in the article. A reader today does not learn that the event which prompted this bombing was named, and catalogued, as a massacre.
