Hezbollah

Hezbollah (“Party of God”) is an Iranian-created, Iranian-financed Shia jihadist army based in Lebanon, designated a terrorist organization in whole or in part by more than two dozen countries, and responsible for some of the deadliest terror attacks of the past half century. It also runs candidates in Lebanese elections and holds seats in parliament, which is the fact Wikipedia’s article chooses to lead with.

What it is

Hezbollah was built in the early 1980s by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps out of Lebanon’s Shia militias, and it has never hidden what it is: its founding manifesto pledges loyalty to Iran’s Supreme Leader, and its leaders describe the organization as part of Iran’s “axis of resistance.” It is the crown jewel of Tehran’s proxy network, historically funded at several hundred million dollars a year, and for most of its existence it has fielded a missile arsenal and fighting force stronger than the Lebanese state’s own army. Two binding Security Council resolutions, 1559 (2004) and 1701 (2006), required its disarmament. Neither was ever implemented.

What it has done

1983, Beirut: the suicide truck bombings of the US embassy (63 dead) and of the US Marine and French paratrooper barracks (241 American and 58 French servicemen killed), the deadliest single day for the US Marine Corps since Iwo Jima.
1992 and 1994, Buenos Aires: the bombing of the Israeli embassy (29 dead) and of the AMIA Jewish community center (85 dead), the worst terrorist attack in Argentina’s history; Argentine prosecutors formally attributed both to Hezbollah operatives acting for Iran.

The war it opened ended with its command decapitated: its pager and radio networks destroyed in September 2024, its secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah killed days later, and its overland supply line lost with the fall of the Assad regime that December.

The designations

The United States designated Hezbollah a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 1997, among the earliest designations ever made. The United Kingdom proscribed it in full in 2019, ending the fiction of separate “political” and “military” wings, a distinction Hezbollah’s own leaders have mocked; Germany (2020), the Netherlands (2004), Canada, Australia (in full, 2021), Argentina, Israel and the Gulf Cooperation Council states have done the same. The EU still designates only the “military wing.” An honest lead states this in the first breath, because a reader deciding what Hezbollah is needs it first, not twenty-eighth.

The “political party” frame

The parliamentary seats are real, and an honest article reports them. What the framing conceals is the causal order: Hezbollah does not hold power in Lebanon because it wins arguments; it wins arguments because it holds the guns. Its Lebanese critics have a habit of dying, and a UN-backed tribunal convicted a Hezbollah operative for the 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri. Calling the organization a “political party with an armed wing” assembles true words into a false whole.
