Rafi Mehoudar
Rafi Mehoudar (born in Israel, graduated the Technion’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1966) is the engineer who solved the problem that had kept drip irrigation a niche curiosity: clogging. Simcha Blass discovered the underlying principle in the 1930s and co-founded Netafim at Kibbutz Hatzerim in 1965 to commercialize it, but early drippers silted up in the field within months. Mehoudar, brought in by Netafim’s founders in 1972, engineered the self-flushing, pressure-compensating dripper that made the technology reliable enough to scale worldwide. That single mechanical fix now underlies a company operating in more than 110 countries, and it is the reason a small, water-poor country became the reference point the world copies for growing food with a fraction of the water flood irrigation requires.
Who he is
Section titled “Who he is”Mehoudar graduated the Technion, Israel’s flagship engineering university, in 1966 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was inventing before he had the degree: at age 20, while still a student, he designed the dual-flush toilet mechanism now standard in nearly every bathroom in Israel, and around the same period built a sprinkler capable of watering square plots evenly, a real engineering problem given that a standard rotary sprinkler throws water in a circle and either starves the corners of a square field or oversprays past its edges. Both were signs of a working method that stayed consistent for the rest of his career: take an ordinary fixture everyone assumes is already optimized, find the physical inefficiency inside it, and re-engineer the mechanism rather than the concept. Over roughly five decades he has accumulated about 400 patents, and the Technion awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2014 for the body of work.
What he built, and why it was hard
Section titled “What he built, and why it was hard”The idea behind drip irrigation is simple to state: instead of flooding a field or spraying it from above, run water through tubing laid along the crop rows and release it drop by drop, directly at each plant’s roots, so almost none is lost to evaporation or runoff. Blass had proven the principle worked; the difficulty was making it survive contact with real water. Irrigation water carries dissolved minerals, algae and grit, and a dripper’s outlet has to be narrow enough to meter a slow drip, which means it is also narrow enough to clog. A clogged emitter starves the plant behind it, and a field of clogged emitters defeats the entire point of the system. Mehoudar’s contribution was a dripper mechanism that used the turbulence of the water’s own flow to continuously scour the internal channel clean, while a separate mechanical element compensated for pressure differences along a long tubing run so that the plant at the far end of the row got the same drip rate as the plant nearest the source. That combination, self-cleaning and pressure-compensating in one small plastic unit, is what let Netafim sell into fields the company’s founders had never seen, with no engineer on hand to service them.
Where and when
Section titled “Where and when”Mehoudar joined the effort at Kibbutz Hatzerim in the Negev desert in 1972, seven years after Blass and the kibbutz had founded Netafim there in 1965. The kibbutz model mattered here: a collective farming community with an engineering problem it could not ignore, since the Negev has little water and less rain, had every incentive to fund years of iteration on a dripper that did not yet work reliably. Mehoudar’s redesign moved through the 1970s and into commercial production, and by the time Netafim was competing for export contracts in the following decades, the self-flushing mechanism was the product’s core selling point against every rival system on the market.
The scale of it
Section titled “The scale of it”By its own current accounting, Netafim operates in more than 110 countries, has produced over 150 billion drippers, has irrigated more than 10 million hectares of farmland, and serves more than 8.5 million farmers worldwide. Those are not marketing rounding errors; they are the measure of a mechanism small enough to hold in one hand multiplying across the world’s arid and semi-arid farmland, from India to sub-Saharan Africa to the American West. The company Blass and the kibbutz founded on the strength of Mehoudar’s fix was sold to the Mexican conglomerate Mexichem (now Orbia) in a deal completed in 2018 valuing it at roughly 1.5 billion dollars, a socialist kibbutz’s irrigation workshop having become a multinational supplier that agronomists credit with helping farmers grow more food on less water than any other method in wide use.
Why a country like this produces this
Section titled “Why a country like this produces this”Mehoudar’s career is not an isolated genius story; it fits a pattern. Israel conscripts its population and routes disproportionate numbers of its most technically able citizens through military and civilian research units that treat resource scarcity, water, land, defense, as engineering problems to be solved rather than accepted. Danny Gold, who forced the Iron Dome missile interceptor into existence against internal skepticism, and Dov Moran, who invented the USB flash drive, both came out of the same culture of hands-on tinkering under pressure that produced Mehoudar: a small country with no margin for waste, an engineering school (the Technion) that trains far more engineers per capita than its population would predict, and a social permission, often called chutzpah, to walk into an established industry and tell it that the thing it has been doing for decades is being done wrong. Mehoudar himself has said his drippers now help feed close to a billion people, an unverifiable but widely repeated figure that nonetheless captures the scale advocates attribute to a fix for a problem most engineers would not have thought worth the trouble: a clog.
Who actually invented it, and what the sale really proves
Section titled “Who actually invented it, and what the sale really proves”Popular retellings sometimes collapse this into a single-inventor story, crediting either Blass or Mehoudar alone with “inventing drip irrigation.” Neither framing is accurate. Blass identified the physical principle and built the first working system and company; Mehoudar’s mechanical redesign is what let that system survive years of unattended use in dirty field water, which is the difference between a demonstration and an industry. Both contributions were necessary and neither was sufficient alone, and Netafim’s own materials credit the founding to Blass and the kibbutz while crediting Mehoudar’s dripper as the technology that scaled it. Critics of reading Israeli innovation as pure national triumph point to the 2018 sale to the Mexican conglomerate Mexichem, now Orbia, as proof the wins get exported along with the ownership. That gets the story backward: a kibbutz workshop’s mechanical fix became valuable enough for a global conglomerate to pay roughly 1.5 billion dollars for it precisely because the invention itself, the engineering that started at Kibbutz Hatzerim, was that good. The ownership moved. The origin, and the fix that made it work, did not.
