Followers of a religion founded in 19th-century Persia teaching the unity of faiths, with their world centre and shrines in Haifa and Acre, where they were exiled by the Ottomans. Iran’s largest religious minority and the only one the Islamic Republic does not recognise: barred from university, their cemeteries bulldozed, their leadership imprisoned in waves since 1979.
