Occupied vs Disputed

The land changed hands in a defensive war in 1967 and had no recognised sovereign before that, since Jordan’s 1948 annexation was recognised by almost no one. That is why Israel and many legal scholars call it disputed, to be settled by negotiation under UN Resolution 242, rather than simply ‘occupied.’ Its legal status is genuinely contested.
