An ancient Israelite community holding only the Torah and worshipping on Mount Gerizim rather than in Jerusalem, descended from the northern kingdom. Numbering hundreds of thousands in antiquity, they were reduced by Byzantine and later Muslim persecution to about 850 people today, split between Holon in Israel and Kiryat Luza near Nablus.
