Myth: Jews are a single race.
“Jews are a single race.”
Jewish identity is peoplehood and religion, not race. Jews include Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, Ethiopian (Beta Israel), Indian and converts of every background, bound by shared history, faith and culture.
Origin of the claim
Section titled “Origin of the claim”The idea that Jews form a single, biologically fixed race is not an ancient folk belief. It is a product of 19th and early 20th century European race science, the same pseudoscientific movement that ranked “Aryan,” “Nordic” and “Semitic” peoples on a hierarchy of blood. German anthropologists such as Hans F. K. Günther popularized the notion of a fixed Jewish racial type, supposedly identifiable by physical and mental traits, regardless of religious practice, language or country of birth.
The claim reached its most consequential form on 15 September 1935, when the Nazi-controlled Reichstag passed the Nuremberg Laws at the annual party rally in that city. The laws discarded religion as the legal test of Jewish identity and substituted a racial one: anyone with three or four Jewish grandparents was a Jew by law, whatever they believed, while those with one or two Jewish grandparents became Mischlinge, “mixed race,” with curtailed rights. The definition caught baptized Christians, atheists and grandchildren of converts who had never thought of themselves as Jews. That is the direct ancestor of today’s myth: a legal fiction built to make persecution administratively simple, later mistaken by some for settled biology.
The evidence
Section titled “The evidence”At its strongest, the claim is this: Jewish communities practiced endogamy, marriage within the group, for roughly two thousand years, and genome studies have found a real, measurable signal of shared Middle Eastern ancestry running through Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi populations. A 2010 genome-wide study led by Doron Behar, published in Nature, sampled fourteen Jewish communities and found that most cluster together and trace to a common Middle Eastern ancestral population, distinct from their non-Jewish neighbors. A companion 2010 study, Gil Atzmon’s “Abraham’s Children in the Genome Era,” found the same pattern: Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Middle Eastern Jewish groups form a genetic continuum with recent Middle Eastern origin.
That is real, and this wiki states it without hedging. But a shared ancestral signal in a population that intermarried within itself for two millennia is not the same thing as a single race. The same research also found centuries of admixture with host populations: Ashkenazi Jews carry a European component from conversion and intermarriage in the Rhineland and later Eastern Europe; Mizrahi communities carry Middle Eastern and North African admixture matching their host societies; the Beta Israel of Ethiopia and the Bene Israel and Cochin Jews of India show genetic profiles overlapping their African and South Asian neighbors far more than they overlap Ashkenazi Europeans. A 2013 study by Behar and colleagues, testing the claim that Ashkenazi Jews descend mainly from Khazar converts, found no significant genetic contribution from that source, closing the door on the theory in the other direction too: not a wandering “pure” race, and not a fabricated one either, but a religiously and culturally bound people who absorbed converts throughout their history.
Judaism has never barred converts on racial grounds. Ruth the Moabite, ancestor of King David, is the Bible’s own founding convert story. Rabbinic law treats a convert as fully Jewish, with no asterisk on the conversion. That fact alone is fatal to the “single race” claim on its own terms: a race, by definition, cannot be joined by choice and ritual.
Who pushes this today
Section titled “Who pushes this today”The claim now travels in directions that look opposite but share the same underlying error, treating Jewishness as a matter of blood rather than religion, culture and peoplehood.
Antisemites use it to racialize Jews as a permanent, foreign biological bloc, the same move white nationalist and “great replacement” rhetoric makes when it treats Jews as a race to be tracked, counted or excluded, echoing Nuremberg-era language even when the speaker does not know its history.
A second group, anti-Zionist activists reviving Arthur Koestler’s 1976 book The Thirteenth Tribe, argues the opposite claim with the identical racial logic: that Ashkenazi Jews are not a “real” Semitic people but descendants of the Khazars, a Turkic kingdom whose elite may have adopted Judaism, and therefore have no ancestral claim to the land of Israel. This is the khazar myth, and it depends on the same premise it claims to attack: that Jewish identity is a matter of racial descent rather than religion, law and continuous practice. The 2013 genetic study and the historical record both undercut it, but the theory persists in anti-Zionist forums because it does political work regardless of the science.
A third group, extremist sects within the Black Hebrew Israelite movement, some tracked by the ADL for antisemitic rhetoric, argue that today’s Jews are racial “impostors” and that they alone are the true biological descendants of the ancient Israelites, again treating Jewish identity as a race that can be correctly or incorrectly held rather than a covenant and a practiced religion open to anyone who joins it.
What the genetics actually prove, and why it isn’t a race
Section titled “What the genetics actually prove, and why it isn’t a race”The strongest form of the objection: there is a real, documented genetic signature of shared Middle Eastern origin across most of the historic Jewish diaspora communities, published, peer-reviewed science, replicated across multiple independent studies.
That signature describes a population with a strong ancestral thread and heavy later admixture, not a race in the closed, fixed sense the word has carried since the 19th century. A closed race does not absorb centuries of Rhineland, North African, Ethiopian and Indian admixture and still hold together as one people; a covenant does. Jews are best described the way Jews have described themselves for three thousand years, as an am, a people, bound by covenant, history, law and culture, open to converts, not sealed by blood.
