Occupation, 1967 or 1948?

Two very different claims hide inside one word, and the slip is the point. The version the world pictures is the land Israel took in 1967, the West Bank and (until 2005) Gaza, where the settlements and checkpoints are, land whose status is genuinely debated (see Occupied vs Disputed). But for much of the movement, ‘occupied Palestine’ means all of Israel, the 1948 lines included: the maps show no Israel at all, ‘from the river to the sea’ brackets the whole country, and the ‘right of return’ is built to end the Jewish majority. The tell: from 1949 to 1967 Egypt held Gaza and Jordan held the West Bank, with no settlements and no ‘occupation,’ and made no Palestinian state, so 1967 cannot be the root grievance.
