One of the oldest antisemitic conspiracy theories, used to justify persecution for centuries. Jews are roughly 0.2% of the world’s population and hold no collective control over any institution. It is a recognized hate trope, debunked again and again.

Where it comes from

The modern template is the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, first published in 1903 in Znamia (The Banner), a St. Petersburg newspaper edited by Pavel Krushevan, and popularized by Sergei Nilus in Russia soon after. It purports to be the minutes of a secret Jewish council plotting to seize the world’s banks, press and governments. It was fabricated by Tsarist Russia’s secret police, the Okhrana, largely lifted from two earlier, non-Jewish texts: Maurice Joly’s 1864 political satire against Napoleon III, Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, and Hermann Goedsche’s 1868 German novel Biarritz. The theft was documented as early as 1920 by journalist Lucien Wolf, and conclusively in 1921 when The Times of London ran a side-by-side comparison proving the Protocols was plagiarized wholesale. Herman Bernstein’s 1921 book The History of a Lie and Benjamin Segel’s 1924 analysis confirmed the finding. The forgery predates any of the institutions it claims Jews already controlled: there was no global media industry, no central banking system as understood today, and no Jewish state in 1903.

Exposure did not kill it. Industrialist Henry Ford republished it in his newspaper The Dearborn Independent through the 1920s, packaged into the pamphlet series The International Jew, distributed in the millions of copies in the United States and translated into German. The Nazi regime used it as core propaganda: it was excerpted in school textbooks and in Julius Streicher’s paper Der Stürmer, and Adolf Hitler cited it approvingly in Mein Kampf despite knowing, per his own private secretary’s later testimony, that its authenticity was already in doubt. The Holocaust is the historical proof of where the claim leads when a state acts on it.

The claim and the record against it

Stated in its strongest form, the myth points to real individual Jews in visible finance and media roles: a Rothschild family name attached to 19th-century European banking, Jewish executives at some American film studios and newspapers in the 20th century, or Jewish billionaires appearing on modern rich lists. From there it leaps to collective, coordinated ethnic control.

The leap fails on its own numbers. World Jewish population is about 15.7 million people, roughly 0.2% of humanity, spread across dozens of countries with no shared citizenship, government or chain of command. Central banks, from the US Federal Reserve to the European Central Bank, are staffed by career economists and appointed by elected governments; their leadership rotates by law, not by ethnicity. Major global media conglomerates, Comcast, Disney, Paramount, News Corp, are publicly traded companies owned by millions of diversified shareholders and pension funds, not by any ethnic bloc. And most of the world’s roughly 195 governments have never had a Jewish head of state; Israel is the sole Jewish-majority nation, and it does not control the domestic politics of any other country.

Jews were historically pushed toward finance and, later, publishing and entertainment because European guilds, universities and civil services barred them from land ownership and many professions for centuries; disproportionate visibility in a handful of accessible industries is a documented byproduct of exclusion, not evidence of a plot to seize the rest. Overrepresentation in a field relative to a group’s population share is real and common to many ethnic and immigrant groups; it is not the same claim as collective, coordinated control of banks, media and governments.

Who pushes it today

The charge did not stay confined to Nazi Germany. Article 22 of the 1988 Hamas Covenant repeats Protocols-style claims that a hidden Jewish hand engineered the French and Russian revolutions, founded international financial institutions and directs world media, attributing to Jews the same secret global control the 1903 forgery invented. It is one of the clearest documented cases of a governing charter of an internationally designated terrorist organization citing the myth as settled fact.

The trope also drives modern violence. Robert Bowers, who murdered 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in October 2018, posted “great replacement” claims online just before the attack: that Jewish-run institutions were orchestrating immigration to replace white populations, a direct descendant of the banks-media-government myth. The ADL’s 2024 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents recorded the highest number of antisemitic incidents in the United States since tracking began in 1979, with “Jewish control” conspiracy content among the recurring online themes. The claim also appears in explicit white-nationalist rhetoric, in some Nation of Islam material, in Iranian and other state media, and in a softer form as exaggerated claims about a monolithic “Israel lobby” bending a superpower’s foreign policy, a related but distinct charge addressed on its own page. It is a recurring feature of new antisemitism, where old religious hatred is repackaged as commentary on power and finance.

The overrepresentation fact, and why it doesn’t add up to control

Jews are, in specific countries and specific decades, statistically overrepresented among Nobel laureates, in certain finance sectors and in American entertainment leadership relative to their tiny population share. That fact is real and does not need to be denied to answer the myth. What is false is the inferential leap from “some prominent individuals in a field happen to be Jewish” to “an organized, secret, ethnic body controls that field and coordinates across banking, media and every world government.” No such body has ever been found, named, or produced a single verifiable document, a century and two world wars after the founding forgery was exposed.
