Khilafat Movement: what Wikipedia removed
The Khilafat movement was a campaign by Indian Muslims explicitly described, in its own subtitle, as a pan-Islamist protest movement aimed at restoring the caliphate. Through 2020 the opening called it “a pan-Islamist political protest campaign launched by Muslims of British India… to restore the calip[hate].” Today’s opening calls it only “a political campaign launched by Indian Muslims… over British policy against Turkey,” with islamist surviving twice elsewhere in the article, not the opening. A reader arriving now does not learn that the movement described its own aim as pan-Islamist and directed at restoring the caliphate.
The word “islamist” appeared 2 times in this article’s opening at its peak, in 2020. Today the opening carries none; the body carries 2. Checked against the full current article on 2026-08-01.

The Khilafat Movement (1919-1924) was a movement amongst the Muslims of British India (the largest single Muslim community in one geo-political entity at the time) to ensure that the British, victors of World War I , kept a promise made at the Versailles .
